The relations between Somalia and Türkiye are experiencing the brightest period of a deep-rooted friendship that stretches from the depths of history to the present day. The ties that began during the Ottoman era were revived in the 21st century, turning not only into a diplomatic partnership but also into a true story of brotherhood.
Today, Somalia–Türkiye relations stand at the heart of both countries’ vision for regional peace, development, and stability. In 2011, the historic visit by then–Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Mogadishu became a turning point in modern relations. This visit sent a strong message that Türkiye would stand by Somalia not only diplomatically but also in humanitarian terms.
Since then, steps taken in every field have made the Somalia–Türkiye partnership unique. Türkiye has become one of Somalia’s most reliable partners in its journey of development. Roads, hospitals, ports, and airports in Mogadishu have been modernized. The development of Aden Adde International Airport, the efficient operation of Mogadishu Port, and urban infrastructure projects are among the symbols of Türkiye’s tangible contributions.
Türkiye has undertaken projects that directly improve the quality of life of the Somali people. The Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Training and Research Hospital has become one of the most modern healthcare centers not only in Somalia but in all of East Africa. Hundreds of Somali students are studying in Türkiye on scholarships and returning to their country as highly qualified professionals.
Türkiye also provides strategic support to Somalia’s security. At the TURKSOM Military Training Base, thousands of Somali soldiers have been trained, contributing to the country’s fight against terrorism and strengthening its border security. Cooperation in the defense industry enables the Somali Armed Forces to develop into a modern and well-equipped structure.
The trade volume between the two countries increases each year. Projects in agriculture, construction, energy, space, and maritime sectors are contributing to the revival of the Somali economy while strengthening Türkiye’s presence in the Horn of Africa.
Somalia–Türkiye relations are not limited to the present; they are also based on a shared vision for building the future. This vision aims to make Somalia one of Africa’s rising powers and to further cement Türkiye’s position as Africa’s true friend and strategic partner.
Somalia–Türkiye relations are one of the rare examples where mutual trust, sincerity, and common interests intersect — transforming the friendship of the past into the strategic partnership of today, and today’s cooperation into the shared success of tomorrow. This story is destined to go down in history as a success that will shape not only the future of the two countries but also that of the entire region.
