Prof. Dr. Ali Sheikh Ahmed, Rector of Mogadishu University in Somalia, praised Türkiye’s achievements in scientific research and emphasized the importance of educational cooperation between the two nations.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency during his visit to Istanbul, Ahmed said, “Unlike in the past, Türkiye is now producing remarkably advanced scientific research. We are truly impressed by Türkiye’s experience in this field.”
He noted that such progress was made possible by safeguarding freedoms. “Countries that restrict diverse thinking and limit fundamental freedoms lose the race in scientific research,” Ahmed added.
Highlighting the strength of Türkiye–Somalia educational ties, Ahmed said Türkiye ranks first in sharing educational and cultural expertise with Somalia.
“From high school to doctoral level, 3,000 Somali students are currently studying in Türkiye, many of whom receive special scholarships. Türkiye has also accepted graduates from Somali universities to continue their studies, which has increased international recognition of Somali institutions,” he explained.
Ahmed stated that Türkiye is the top destination for Somali students seeking education abroad. “The Somali community deeply trusts Turkish universities. There are also Turkish students in Somali universities—30 of them are currently studying at ours,” he said.
“Türkiye Carries Noble Humanitarian Goals”
Rector Ahmed described President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s 2011 visit to Somalia—while serving as prime minister—as a turning point for the country.
“That visit sparked progress in many areas. It changed not only Somalia’s view of Türkiye, but also Türkiye’s approach to Somalia,” he said.
He underlined that Türkiye’s aid is multidimensional: “Every wise person can see that Türkiye carries noble humanitarian goals. In the long run, the economic and political initiatives will benefit both Türkiye and Somalia.”
Referring to Erdoğan’s second visit to Somalia in January 2015, Ahmed emphasized that Türkiye’s engagement extends beyond humanitarian aid.
“This is about something bigger,” he said. “President Erdoğan focused not only on emergency relief but also on development. Plans for building a hospital in Mogadishu aim to make it one of the most important in Africa. There are also projects for port and airport construction. And these initiatives are not limited to the capital—they extend to other regions as well.”
