The Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Training and Research Hospital in the capital Mogadishu has made medical history by successfully performing its first open-heart surgery.

The procedure was carried out on 74-year-old Somali patient Abdullahi Muhammed Jama by a team led by Associate Professor Dr. Mehmet Kızılay from Türkiye, in collaboration with Somali cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Abdinafi Mahmud Hüseyin, who received his medical education in Türkiye.

Following the successful operation, Hospital Director Dr. Mevlüt Karataş (fifth from the left) posed for a commemorative photo with the surgical team. The hospital, which is the largest in Somalia, continues to be a symbol of Türkiye-Somalia medical cooperation and capacity building.
