Ankara – Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Isse Awad, emphasized the deep bond between Somalia and Türkiye during his official visit to Ankara, stating, “The Somali people and government will be forever grateful to Türkiye. Türkiye has done so much for Somalia. The hearts and minds of the Somali people are with the Turkish people.”

In an interview, Minister Awad praised the strong and growing relationship between Türkiye and Somalia following his bilateral meetings with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. He conveyed greetings from Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish people for their continued support in areas such as infrastructure, human resources, security, and education scholarships.

“Türkiye Has a Special Place in the Hearts of Somalis”

Minister Awad stated, “Türkiye holds a very special place in the hearts of the Somali people. Somalia has no better friend than Türkiye. The Somali people know this well.”

“UN Arms Embargo Is Outdated and Should Be Lifted”

Commenting on the UN Security Council’s decision to extend the arms embargo on Somalia, Awad criticized the move, calling it “outdated” and ineffective. He said, “This embargo hinders our ability to defend our country. Lifting it would strengthen Somalia’s fight against al-Shabaab. No sovereign nation would be content with limitations on its military capabilities.”

“Türkiye’s Mediation Between Somalia and Somaliland Is Appreciated”

Regarding the longstanding dispute between Somalia and its self-declared autonomous region Somaliland, Awad praised Türkiye’s mediation efforts. “Somaliland is part of Somalia, and Türkiye has been very helpful in facilitating dialogue between the two sides. These efforts are appreciated and welcomed,” he said.

He also noted the positive role of Olgan Bekar, Türkiye’s former Ambassador to Mogadishu and current Special Envoy for the Somalia–Somaliland dialogue. Awad acknowledged Bekar’s continued efforts and constructive approach to resolving the issue.

Minister Awad’s visit further reinforced the strategic partnership between Türkiye and Somalia, reflecting a shared vision for peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa.
