A soup kitchen operated by the Turkish Red Crescent in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, provides meals to 3,150 people every day and distributes food to various parts of the city, continuing vital humanitarian efforts in the drought-stricken country.
The Turkish Red Crescent has been active in Somalia since 2011, when the country faced one of the deadliest famines in decades. Speaking to Anadolu Agency at Türkiye’s Embassy in Mogadishu, Orhan Kökcü, the head of the Turkish Red Crescent delegation in Somalia, emphasized the organization’s broad scope of humanitarian work.
“Since 2011, we’ve been working in critical areas including nutrition, shelter, water and sanitation, and education,” Kökcü said. “Our soup kitchen in Mogadishu is just one example of how we’re helping address immediate needs.”
The Turkish Red Crescent remains one of the key international actors providing continuous support to Somalia in response to ongoing food insecurity, displacement, and infrastructure challenges.
